have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo
Yesterday was a day of highs and lows and one very prolonged heart attack. I cannot stress the need for ferret proofing and being observant of your environment. Yesterday was Monday and I had to get up early to go to job training down in Butler, Pa.
That meant I had to get up at 6am to get everyone feed, watered, and rotated. Now the room where Boyd the cat normally resides is being remodeled along with the roof being done on that side so he and I are residing in the ferret’s room.
During the day, the ferrets are out of their cage and at night, Boyd gets out of his crate to roam the hallway and the room. Boyd has a bad habit. He scratches at the window screen and nothing has stopped him from doing it. What I didn’t realize was that he had actually put a hole in the screen, which wouldn’t had been a problem if I had seen it before I left for my training that lasted from 8am to 5pm
I get home around 5:30pm and go upstairs to get out of my jeans and take my knee brace off entering the room I noticed that several things are out of place on the windowsill and then I see the six-inch long hole. Panic sets in and I start looking for my fur kids. Sleeping in a bin is Manny and Marylin.
As you can see from the pictures, I tore the room apart looking for Marcuz.
Looking out the window cold fear starts to develop as I realize that Marcuz had to have gone through the hole and out onto the roof. Racing down the stairs, I grab Manny’s harness and a leash speeding through the living room roomie asks what is wrong but the lump in my throat won’t let me speak so I just wave her off.
Stopping on the porch, I peer around the corner afraid to find a tiny broken body. There is none so the cold fear starts to receded and the panic starts to take over again. I can’t call for Marcuz as he is deaf and wouldn’t hear me. After checking around the outside of the house I go back in and get my voice to work long enough to tell Roomie that Marcuz has to be outside somewhere.
To which she tells me that Mr.. Z had been going ballistic earlier in the day and she thought someone had been knocking at the door but when she checked there was no one there but Mr.. Z laid on the floor and stared outside. Roomie thought it might have been the stray cat that comes around or the dog from across the street.
Back upstairs to make sure I hadn’t over looked one of Marcuz’s hidey-holes. I hadn’t so back down the stairs and Mr.. Z and roomie are outside checking out things. Mr.. Z seems to be on the trail of something but what it was unknown and didn’t seem to be Marcuz. Thankfully, our neighbors are good and they put their own dogs inside or in the dog’s kennel.
This weekend was the community day yard sale and I hadn’t gotten all the boxes back inside so before getting off the porch for the third or fourth time I shook each box in hopes of noticing a weight difference or having Marcuz pop out of one.
Around the block, checking the tree Marcuz loves to dig at when we go for cool evening walks to the back yard where the Ferret Chariot is parked. Roomie says to check under the garage. It is kind of dark under there so I start to go inside to get the flashlight when I hear something on the porch. I stop and look to where the sound is coming from and from behind the board leaning against the wide railing comes this grayish pink nose.
Marcuz’ white first is dusky grey and he smells of dirt but he is perfectly fine. Did he drop from the roof to the ground? Or did he get down to the gutter and follow it around to where the plastic was stapled to the roof and used it as a rope to get down? Or did he somehow figure out how to go down the ladder? I have no answers but there is not a mark on Marcuz.
I am sure that my neighbors finally have proof that I am the crazy ferret lady after this adventure. Taking Marcuz back up to the room I secured the window and took his access to it away before letting him loose and what does the little booger do? He starts weasel war dancing around the room with this look of pure delight.
My nerves are still shot and my chest hurts from where my heart was pounding on it but thankfully, Marcuz has been found uninjured and unfazed.
Moral of the story: ALWAYS CHECK! Ferret proofing isn’t a onetime thing and needs to be constantly updated.
Have a Safe and Chittering Good Day,
Jo
Tomorrow we will be up bright and early to start our long drive to Tyson’s Corner, VA and the start of Blog Paws.
We are sad that our buddies Nikki and Ashley, from I love Rescue Animals won’t be there but were pleasantly surprised to find out that Edna from Nutro, Snotface Critter, George the Duck’s Typist will all be there.
This is the first year that we had two sponsors one we have met and the ferrets love giving her kisses and hugs. This is the second year she has supported Enlightened Ferret again thank you Lisa Taron.
After many emails back and forth and I am sure some other outside help we secured sponsorship from Marshall Pet.
Notice: If you don’t like them that is fine but don’t put hateful comments as they will be deleted from this post and any other regarding the Blog Paws Event.
This year the little fur kids will have their own playground to romp in not that, the dog park wasn’t fun for my kids it was my own peace of mind that was worn.
Enlightened Ferret will have some surprises for a few people as well. What they are differ from person to person but we are sure they will be well enjoyed.
With roomie joining us at this year’s Blog Paws, I hope to be in more pictures with my fur kids than they are. *Chitters* but they are the draw.
If you have questions about ferrets please be sure to stop by the Washington Metro Area Ferret Outreach’s table or Marshall’s if you can’t find them or they are too busy I will give you an answer if I can or will help you find it.
Ask nicely and I will chitter for you.
See you at Blog Paws.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo

P.S. these are from ferents that wanted something special for their fur babies.
April 2nd was dedicated to helping others recognize the growing ferret community by educating others in the welfare of ferrets. With that said we are proud to update you on the progress of an amazing little ferret girl named Grace.
If you haven’t read Grace’s story you can do so here, but be forewarned that the picture is disturbing.
Not only has Grace survived she is improving each day. She is now eating a little on her own and her blood work is showing improvement but the biggest improvement is her weight gain. While she is still very underweight, she is regaining her strength along with the weight gain.
Photo from Washington Metro Area Ferret Outreach Facebook page.
This little girl has earned a huge following of people who have reached out to help her get well. Enlightened Ferret is proud to be a part of that by creating a special Ferret WarmUp Jacket named for her.
For each one sold 50% of the sale will go to Amazing Grace.
If you would like to help Grace, you can do so by donating to the Washington Metro Area Ferret Outreach
and put for Grace in the note.
This little girl may not have known love in her past but now that is all she knows.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo
Since we have been tweeting pictures of the Ferret Chariot as it gets it make over we have been asked how others can get their names added and so here is a chance to be added.
In PA a yearly inspection is required to make sure a vehicle is safe to be on the road. The Ferret Chariot’s inspection is due in September and it will need to have some things done so it will pass.
Once again there is a chip In for the Ferret Chariot and a way to become a part of something bigger. This time there are only a few spaces due to the panel size I will be putting the Ferret Chariot Maintenance Crew.
These are the Levels to be added to the list of Maintenance donors
Parts Store (30) Donations of $5
Lube Shop (24) Donations of $10
Glass Worker (20) Donations of $20
Backyard Mechanic (15) Donations of $30
Grease Monkey (10) Donations of $40
Mechanic (4) Donations of $50
Head Mechanic (1) Donation of $250
Shop Owner (1) Donation of $500 or above
Remember Chip In charges a shipping fee of $4.50 if you wish to avoid this fee please use PayPal and the payment addy is planestraveler@gmail.com and be sure to mark it as a gift otherwise PayPal will take out a fee.
Our goal amount is 1500 and as each level is filled we will be reducing the numbers to reflect the number of donors.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo
What a month this has been so far.
First we found the perfect vehicle to be the Ferret Chariot and have made a down payment on it we will be paying off the last little bit owed on Thursday and driving it home. More on the Ferret Chariot when we have the keys in hand.
We were notified that we were a finalist in the Nose to Nose blogger contest through Blog Paws. Our category is Best Wiggle Blog. We are in the running with three other blogs.
And we are running against another ferret blog
Good luck to all.
We get this nifty badge
Now as a finalist we have a pass to Blog Paws but since we have already had ours we are giving away our second one to one lucky commenter. This will run until May 28th then I’ll choice the winner by using random.org
I like to make my contests easy with no hoop jumping as that just annoys me when I have to do it.
But there are a few rules
1. No I want to win entries I will delete those
2. Tell me what you’ve been told about ferret.
3. Tell me what you have learned about ferrets through this blog and conversations with me on twitter
4. Tell me what you would like to learn about at Blog Paws
Have a Chittering Good Day,

Ferrets live life in the fast lane and to the fullest extent that they can. You can see the passion in their eyes as they take on a new challenge or adventure.
This week I made the decision to become the Crazy Ferret Lady and oddly things that I have been wanting to happen have started.
First was being the Featured Blogger on Pet PR’s site while I knew I would eventually be there I did not expect it to happen this week.
Then I was chosen for a writing job that has to do with pets. While it isn’t directly related to ferrets it is part of my passion and may lead to some other pet/ferret related work.
I did a prelim interview about the ferret clothing I make and while I am not ready to let more details out know that it will be huge for me and the boys.
So know your passion make the decision to follow your hearts passion to the ends and above all else grab that shiny and run like hell to your hidey hole to make it yours alone.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo
What an awesome event. Even with the aftershock from the previous Earthquake and the threat of Hurricane Irene Blog Paws out did itself. Loved the sessions I attended and the people I got to meet and talk to.
The food was great although the cheesecake was a bit smaller than the first Blog Paws but I loved the edible Blog Paws tag.
The hotel staffs were wonderful and made their end look like a well oiled machine while they dealt with us and their other guests. The event staff of By Design were also outstanding in making everything run smoothly.
I am recharged mentally with information to share on Enlightened Ferret but still physically tired. You never realize just how wound up you get at a conference with like minded people until you get home and all the adrenaline dissipates from you.
How wonderful it was to hear that the ferrets were a favorite part of Blog Paws and that one of the puppies from Lucky Dog Animal Rescue was adopted.
One of the best parts of Blog Paws was being able to be one of the first media outlets to see the new Buddies movie and talk with the director of the movie and having a picture taken with B-Dawg more information about this in upcoming posts.
The amount of swag was mind blowing. The vendors were great and the stuff they had to talk about was informational as were the stuff they were giving out. At the end of Blog Paws those same vendors gave away stuff to the hotel staff and many of the guests that were stranded because of Irene. What a great way to show those not in attendance how caring pet people can be.
For those that weren’t able to attend Blog Paws 2011 you can read about it on the blogs of those that did go and you can start planning your trip to Blog Paws 2012.
Blog Paws will be in Salt Lake City from June 21-24 2012. More information will show up in the coming months and as always pets are welcomed.
To all my new twitter followers it is going to take me some time to follow back as I am back home to my slow dial up.
To those that weren’t aware of it Manny and Marcuz have their own facebook page. Enlightened Ferret Travels Blog Paws was their first big adventure. Please give them a like.
This is Tuesday and our Featured ferret from ">">Pet Finder is Whiskey Girl of Balch springs,TX.
This Texas girl is one spunky senior who needs a loving home without another ferret or children. She is on medication for the rest of her life but TFLR is willing to help pay for them.
Could it be that Toby Keith’s “Whiskey Girl” was her inspiration for living and loving humans?
If only this little spitfire could talk what would she tell us? So if you live in Balch Springs, TX or know someone who does and can give this little girl a forever home please pass on this info.
Disclosure: I get no financial assistance for posting these ferrets. I pick from the newly listed ferrets on Pet finder and give them some publicity via Enlightened Ferret, twitter in hopes that the right person will read the post and either adopt or send the link to someone looking to give a fuzzy a new forever home.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo
So I have met some really interesting people and talked a lot about ferrets. I have very little voice left but it is so worth it if I reach just one person.
The boys slept most of the day and were oblivious to all the attention they were getting. I am sure their faces are plastered on Facebook, twitpic, other blogs. If you have posted their pictures leave me a link to them so I can see what they look like.
I have to get a lot steadier hand at taking pictures. Opening ceromony
Nikki @DesignCoyote
Ashely @RescueAnimals Hope I got them right this time. For some reason I want Ashely to be Nikki.
One part of the crowd attending Blog Paws 2011.
Manny and Marcuz giving @CokieTheCat some loving.
@BZTAT and the growing crowd.
Photo ops happen as soon as @FlatTyler joined the group and Manny and Marcuz decided that @CokieTheCat was perfect for their cuddle pile.
I am not sure anyone would believe that I am a shy person who has some crowd issues when it seems I am in my element. My two best buds keep me calm and focused and they are my passion.
Which is what Blog Paws is about PASSION. See you all in the morning at breakfast.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo
