The New Enlightened Ferret
Wednesday, June 22, 2016
Things are a Changing
It will become more of a traveling blog as we now live on the road full time and will be incorparte the ferret's facebook mini blog here. Boyd and Dood will become part of the Enlightened posts as well.
This Blog Paws will be a major turning point for me and the kids. I am taking a huge leap of faith in knowing things will work out in the best possible way.
So have a chittering and meowy good day,
Jo and the Furry crew

Pet Blogger's Challenge Repeat offender *chitters*
1. How long have you been blogging? Please tell us why you started blogging, and, for anyone stopping by for the first time, give us a quick description of what your blog is about. I’ve been blogging since 2009 and here is last year’s post.
2. Name one thing about your blog, or one blogging goal that you accomplished during 2013, that made you most proud. I’ve gotten to work with a few companies that I wanted to work with but I didn’t meet most of my goals last year.
3. When you look at the post you wrote for last year’s Pet Blogger Challenge, or just think back over the past year, what about blogging has changed the most for you? That I need to make realistic goals that I can manage now that I am back to working outside the home
4. What lessons have you learned this year – from other blogs, or through your own experience – that could help us all with our own sites? Don’t get stuck in concrete. I mean if you need to take a break do so but at the same time don’t burnout rule you.
If you could ask the pet blogging community for help with one challenge you’re having with your blog, what would it be? More followers/comments. I set a really high goal of 400 readers and then fell off the face of the Blogosphere. But not getting one comment can put a damper on things too. Just a simple “Hi” is all that is needed sometimes.
5. What have you found to be the best ways to bring more traffic to your blog, other than by writing great content? Word of mouth mostly
6. How much time to do you spend publicizing your blog, and do you think you should spend more or less in the coming year? Last year I didn’t do a lot of publicizing my blog and it showed so this year I will be publicizing it more.
7. How do you gauge whether or not what you’re writing is appealing to your audience? I try not to gauge my writing as I tend to get overly critical about it and then I don’t post anything.
How do you know when it’s time to let go of a feature or theme that you’ve been writing about for a while? That is the hardest thing to do. I try to keep with what is current and write updates as they are needed.
8. When you’re visiting other blogs, what inspires you to comment on a post rather than just reading and moving on? It depends on the post and the reason I am reading it. Sometimes it is because someone left a comment on my blog so I let them know I followed their link back to their blog. Other times the subject means a lot to me or I have learned something new.
9. Do you do product reviews and/or giveaways? Yes
If so, what do you find works best, and what doesn’t work at all? I stay away from Raffelcopter as it has too many glitches for my liking and all reviews are my opinion no matter what the outcome. But I need to get several more done that should have been done last year.
If not, is this something you’d like to do more of? What hurdle is getting in your way?
10. When writer’s block strikes and you’re feeling dog-tired, how do you recharge? Last year I had writer’s block and blog burnout not a good combination as I couldn’t seem to pull myself out of it that is until November when I do this thing called Nanowrimo. Where you have to write 50,000 words. I used word association and basically jump started several blog posts that will be showing up this year. Another thing I use is a site called write or die a great motivator.
11. Have you ever taken a break from your blog? How did that go? Yes, I did last year and I felt like I was letting my readers down
Have you ever thought about quitting your blog altogether? What makes you stay? Yes last year I really thought about it. The fact is that there really isn’t any other ferret bloggers.
12. What goals do you have for your blog in 2014?
To post at least one real post a week and one wordless Wednesday post. To reach 100 followers and to let my personal life show through many of my posts this year.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo

Year in Review: 2013
As I sit here sipping at my coffee and watch from my window the snow that is falling I realize that Enlightened Ferret kind of fell down on the job this last year.
The first half of the year seemed to go well but behind the scenes, it was starting to show signs of no feeling it. On top of that our business Enlightened Ferret Fashions took on a mind of its own and gobbled up time that would have gone into writing.
We were completely sponsored for Blog Paws in 2013 something we’ve been working on for a long time. Which was great but it also left us feeling even more exhausted and taught us a valuable lesson. I loved working with Linda Cope and Denise (Sorry I can’t remember your last name) from Marshall Pets but being an introvert (is a person who is energized by being alone and whose energy is drained by being around other people.) and trying to be an extrovert clashed badly.
Kind of like a motorcycle tangling with a semi the motorcycle is going to lose ninety-nine times and so started the slow decline of posts for the rest of the year.
June saw me finally getting a bi weekly paycheck in the form of a job. Working for the Post Office which is great for many reasons but it ate the last little bit of time I had left for me. So now I was working basically two jobs, being a seamstress for Enlightened Ferret Fashions and a PMR (Post Master/Mistress Relief) and what was supposed to be only a few hours a week exploded as the main Post Mistress took time off as she hadn’t been able to for over a year.
Don’t get me wrong I love working there but it is hard to get a set schedule set when you don’t know what is happening day to day. But I digress as the blog suffered for it.
Half-heartedly I posted pictures on Wordless Wednesday until even that faded. So I took several steps back and have been analyzing just where I wanted this blog to go in the following year but I also went back to the first few posts of this last year and saw that I set myself some very unrealistic goals that probably set myself up for some failure.
So the New Year is going to see some changes to Enlightened Ferret.
I will be posting a written post on Mondays and a pic on Wordless Wednesday. Granted that is a lot less than I have been doing but for the moment that is all I can do. They will be a mix of education, news, personal, and reviews, some of these posts maybe very lengthy depending on the subject of the post. Along with the occasional post challenge such as the one on Jan 10. (see badge for details)
Thank you for sticking with Enlightened Ferret though its silence and now that we are rested up we hope to hear from you all as 2014 starts its march towards 2015.
Have a Chittering Good Day and a Dooking New Year,
Jo

Blog Paws 2013
Wow what a wild ride. Finished packing at 4:30 am and then we were on the road. It rained, it was windy, and then the sun came out.
Unfortunately the camera was packed so couldn’t take any pictures. There is still major construction going on so we missed the driveway more than once. lol
Marshall Pets has a nice set up and the kids love the small animal play area. Linda and Denise have been wonderful
and right next to them is Washington Metro Ferret Outreach
Then the camera battery died so no more pictures tonight and I am on my way to a hot bath and a soft bed.
See you all in the morning and have a chittering good day,
Jo

Leading Up to Blog Paws: Packing
Blog Paws is just a few days away and there is still so much to do. The first thing is to get started packing.
For those of us bringing our pets it isn’t as simple as one might think. For those flying it requires a health certificate from the pet’s vet then there is arranging for the pet to fly. Most airlines have a weight and number of pets in the cabin limit.
Ferrets are not allowed in the cabin but can be loaded as cargo, which is absurd, but since we will be driving it doesn’t matter this year.
Roomie and her two rescues, Ariel and newly adopted Z will be coming with us to her very first Blog Paws. So instead of packing for just Manny, Marcuz, and Marylin I am having to add in the two doggies.
Packing is a chore no matter the reason but when you have ferrets, it can be even a bigger chore unless you have a good system in place.
For me that is a list of what needs to be packed and in what suitcase, computer bag, and travel bag.
It shouldn’t be surprising that the ferret’s suitcase has a much longer list than mine but then I only need my clothes, a few grooming supplies as I don’t wear makeup. Now the tech bag is a bit fuller with having my notebook puter, cords, camera, battery charger, phone, extra battery, and charger.
But the list hasn’t changed much for the ferrets with only a few extras added because of Marylin and my list is just to make sure I don’t forget to pack pants, both sets of shoes, or any of my tech that will be needed at Blog Paws.
Don’t forget we all need our business cards. The fur kids have their traveling page cards and I’ll have my blog cards.
Soon we will be blogging from Tysons Corner, VA
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo

Blog Paws Nose to Nose Finalist
Enlightened Ferret is a Finalist in the Best Wiggle Blog category for a Nose to Nose award. This year our competition is:
Congrats to you and may the best wiggler win.
We also want to make sure we thank our two amazing sponsors for our attendance at Blog Paws this year.
Our first sponsor has supported us for the Salt Lake City Blog Paws and this year. She is one of the funniest ladies I know with a dog that loves his neighborhood cats and who created the Cat Patrol. This Canadian loves to have a good time and it shows in her smile. We can’t wait to see Lisa Taron who is known as The Pet Blog Lady in Tysons Corner.
Our other sponsor has been a part of the Enlightened Ferret family in so many different ways. From the birthplace of Manny and Marylin to many of the toys that are hidden within the kid’s room. Marshall Pet Products was established in 1993 as a new division of Marshall Farms.
This is a new adventure for both of us so I can only hope it will be the start of great things to come for the both of us.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo

The Real Pet blog challenge: Repeat Offenders
Thanks to a comment left on my Monday post I was directed to the right link for the Pet Blog Challenge and was able to get the correct questions to answer.
While this is only my second year doing the challenge I have found that doing both posts I’ve percolated my goals down into something very obtainable. So onward to the post
1. How long have you been blogging and provide a link to your post from last year’s Pet Blogger Challenge so we can refresh our memories.
I’ve been blogging since 2009 and here is last years post.
2. What do you consider the most important goals you set out in last year’s post?
Acquiring more followers and doing interviews with people about ferrets
3. Have you made progress toward those goals, or have your goals changed over the past year?
Yes, I have made some progress with getting more followers but not the full hundred I wanted. As for the interviews, I got them but it wasn’t me doing the interviewing it was the other way around. A completely new adventure for me.
4. How often do you post?
I try for three times a week but it seems that towards the end of the year I slow down to only a few posts a month.
5. Has your opinion of blogging on a schedule or as the spirit moves you changed? I think that my opinion is basically the same but how I go about it is changing as I learn more about myself and where I want to take Enlightened Ferret.
If you publish on a schedule why? I find that having a schedule lessens the amount of stress I am under but it also makes me feel boxed in at the same time.
How strict are you about your publishing deadlines? I allow for a little give way but find that if I miss a deadline I feel like I’ve let myself down.
What do you do for inspiration when it feels like you’ve covered every topic? I ask people what they would like to know on some of the social media sites and sometimes I revisit past posts and rewrite them.
If you don’t publish on a schedule, why?
How do you think your decision affects your audience? I am not sure how it affects my readers.
How do you know when a topic is “post-worthy?” Most of the time “post-worthy” topics are the ones I feel new ferret owners need to know or strikes a chord within me.
6. How much time do you spend writing your blog per week? Depends on the topic and how much research I need to do on the topic. Can range anywhere from twenty minutes to three days or more.
How much time visiting other blogs? This is where I feel like I need to improve as I don’t spend a lot of time reading other blogs.
Share your tips for staying on top of it all. Having an editorial calendar with a keyword listed for the day helps along with keeping a list of what “special” day/month might be happening and making a list of topics that are related to that event and ferrets.
7. How do you measure the success of a post and of your blog in general (comments, shares, traffic)? I have Google ad sense and it shows me the number of page views as I don’t often get many comments. The other thing is when I met people and they tell me about a blog post they’ve read and it just happens to be my blog.
Do you look strictly at the numbers, or do you have a way of assessing the quality of those interactions? I think I for the most part still in the mindset that I am blogging just to get the information out there and to educate people. Therefore, the numbers while nice don’t have a huge impact on me.
8. If you could ask the pet blogging community for help with one issue you’re having with your blog, what would it be? Getting more feedback.
9. What goals do you have for your blog in 2013?
To have 400 followers by the end of the year.
To open communication with companies that mostly with dogs and cats and show them another animal that might benefit from the products/services they offer.
To earn an income that would take care of my ferrets comfortably.
To move Enlightened Ferret from blogger to my own hosted site.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo

Pet Blog Challenge 2013
Last year was the first year we participated in this challenge hosted by Go Pet Friendly and Will My Dog Hate Me and participating in this challenge this year will help us focus on where Enlightened Ferret is headed this year.
I couldn’t find if they were doing the challenge this year so I’ve used the questions from last year’s challenge and updated my answers for this year. Here is the link to last year’s post. Pet Blog Challenge 2012
1. When did you begin your blog?
June of 2009
2. What was your original purpose for starting a blog?
To help others understand ferrets and help new or prospective owners understand what having a ferret entailed.
3. Is your current purpose the same? Yes, it is still the main focus along with other aspects of being a ferret owner in a populace of mostly dog and cat owners.
If so, how do you feel you’ve met your goals?
Until last year, I hadn’t really set any goals for Enlightened Ferret. But thanks to doing, this challenge last year I feel that I have met most of my goals for Enlightened Ferret and it has opened the door for other opportunities to help promote Enlightened Ferret.
4. Do you blog on a schedule or as the spirit moves you?
Blogging on a set schedule is hard and sometimes life does get in the way of doing so. But having a few guest posts helps relieve the stress of blogging every time.
If the former, how often — and what techniques do you use to stick to it?
I am trying to use an editorial calendar more so that I have specific posts written for Mondays and Fridays to help eliminate the stress of worrying what to write about. Wednesdays are still reserved for Wordless posts. Last year I tried to have Featured ferrets on Tuesdays and Thursdays but found those to be over whelming and depressing as many of those same ferrets are still looking for forever homes.
5. Are you generating income from your blog?
I have earned some revenue from Enlightened Ferret this last year but not a steady income.
If not currently, do you hope to in the future — and how?
I still have mixed emotions on this. While I do want to have an income from Enlightened Ferret that will allow me to do the things I want to. I don’t want to have ads that are unrelated to Enlightened Ferret’s mission.
6. What do you like most about blogging in general and your blog in particular (bragging is good!)?
I enjoy doing the research for each post I do and hearing from people that have found Enlightened Ferret either by accident or followed a link back from twitter, Facebook, or Linked In.
7. What do you like least?
Self promotion. I am normally very shy and it is really hard to come out of my shell and let other see the passion I have for ferrets.
8. How do you see your blog changing/growing in 2013?
I would love to see Enlightened Ferret gain 400 new followers by the end of 2013 and drawing the attention of companies that cater more to the dog and cat owners and showing them another avenue they might look at for revenue. I also plan on replying to more of the comments than I have been.
I also hope to move Enlightened Ferret from Blogger to its own webpage in 2013.
Hope you will all participate in this challenge this year and see how you do in the coming year.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo

Blog Paws Here We Come and So Can You
What a month this has been so far.
First we found the perfect vehicle to be the Ferret Chariot and have made a down payment on it we will be paying off the last little bit owed on Thursday and driving it home. More on the Ferret Chariot when we have the keys in hand.
We were notified that we were a finalist in the Nose to Nose blogger contest through Blog Paws. Our category is Best Wiggle Blog. We are in the running with three other blogs.
And we are running against another ferret blog
Good luck to all.
We get this nifty badge
Now as a finalist we have a pass to Blog Paws but since we have already had ours we are giving away our second one to one lucky commenter. This will run until May 28th then I’ll choice the winner by using random.org
I like to make my contests easy with no hoop jumping as that just annoys me when I have to do it.
But there are a few rules
1. No I want to win entries I will delete those
2. Tell me what you’ve been told about ferret.
3. Tell me what you have learned about ferrets through this blog and conversations with me on twitter
4. Tell me what you would like to learn about at Blog Paws

Living Life Like a Ferret
Ferrets live life in the fast lane and to the fullest extent that they can. You can see the passion in their eyes as they take on a new challenge or adventure.
This week I made the decision to become the Crazy Ferret Lady and oddly things that I have been wanting to happen have started.
First was being the Featured Blogger on Pet PR’s site while I knew I would eventually be there I did not expect it to happen this week.
Then I was chosen for a writing job that has to do with pets. While it isn’t directly related to ferrets it is part of my passion and may lead to some other pet/ferret related work.
I did a prelim interview about the ferret clothing I make and while I am not ready to let more details out know that it will be huge for me and the boys.
So know your passion make the decision to follow your hearts passion to the ends and above all else grab that shiny and run like hell to your hidey hole to make it yours alone.

Jo

Update On Marcuz and Other Things
Marcuz is back to his old self. Climbing things he shouldn’t and trying to be the dominate male. For now Manny is letting him think that he has won but it will only last until Manny gets tired of Marcuz pushing him around.
For that I am grateful as I am for those that have donated towards the Ferret Chariot. There are so many amazing people out there thank you all.
I am sure that most of you noticed that I’ve been gone for a week both on my blog and twitter. While I could just say I nothing I feel that an explanation is needed.
First you need to know I suffer from Seasonal Affect Disorder (SAD) it is a type of depression that hits many in the winter months or those that don’t get a lot of sun.
There isn’t really a lot known about it and while mine is mild it can become extreme if I am not careful. Which is what happened.
Marcuz getting hurt was just the start. The stress from not being able to get him help and the weird weather threw off my sleeping and eating habits.
Then finding out about a friend losing someone to suicide brought up some unresolved issues of losing someone extremely close to me on the 15th sent me deeper down that dark road.
The final nail that made me withdraw was the fire that cost two people I’ve never met everything and I felt helpless that all I could offer them was a few handmade toys.
I needed to get myself collected and back into the habits that help me deal with my own depression that could have affected how well Marcuz recovered. I know our pets can feel our moods and will try to make us happy.
I didn’t want Marcuz trying to do his funny jig so I would laugh it would have been and is still too soon for him to do that type of wiggling.
So I am back into the habits that keep my SADs in check and the fact that the sun has been out more helps but I am still not 100% but then I don’t think any of us hoomans are ever 100% but I am a lot closer than I was.

Blog Paws Pt. II
So I have met some really interesting people and talked a lot about ferrets. I have very little voice left but it is so worth it if I reach just one person.
The boys slept most of the day and were oblivious to all the attention they were getting. I am sure their faces are plastered on Facebook, twitpic, other blogs. If you have posted their pictures leave me a link to them so I can see what they look like.
I have to get a lot steadier hand at taking pictures. Opening ceromony
Nikki @DesignCoyote
Ashely @RescueAnimals Hope I got them right this time. For some reason I want Ashely to be Nikki.
One part of the crowd attending Blog Paws 2011.
Manny and Marcuz giving @CokieTheCat some loving.
@BZTAT and the growing crowd.
Photo ops happen as soon as @FlatTyler joined the group and Manny and Marcuz decided that @CokieTheCat was perfect for their cuddle pile.
I am not sure anyone would believe that I am a shy person who has some crowd issues when it seems I am in my element. My two best buds keep me calm and focused and they are my passion.
Which is what Blog Paws is about PASSION. See you all in the morning at breakfast.
Have a Chittering Good Day,
Jo

A Year old and still Learning
Wow it’s hard to believe that Enlightened Ferret is almost a year old already. So much has happened since I first started this blog. I didn’t know that it would help people understand these small little creatures and their crazy owners.
I also never thought it would bring me into a community of other like-minded people on twitter let alone to a pet conference where I got to interact with so many other people.
In celebration of the blog turning a year old and the walk James and Manny will be doing soon we are going to have a twitter pawty on June 26th from 6-11 pm EST (Eastern Standard Time).
The theme is outlaws and gangsters. The pawty is to help raise money for Heart of Ohio Ferret Rescue and Association to help the senior ferrets that reside with them. The hash tag will be #hideyhole please RSVPS here Come as your favorite outlaw/gangster as we eat, dance, and trivia towards a goal of $500. There will also be prizes.
This is pawty with a goal but no one is obligated to donate. This is meant to be a fun time. Please realize that twitter sometimes doesn’t post in a timely manner or does it so quick that it is lost among other posts it also depends on if the fail whale eats your post. If you feel that you have been overlooked please retweet the post again. We anipals are not snobby but posts do get missed sometimes.
The walk James, Manny, and I were going to do was suppose to be 21 miles long but with the way PA weather has been it will be reduced to 12 miles.
This allows for ferret adventures that means allowing James and Manny time to sniff the area, potty breaks, and playtime in a new place.
It also means I won’t be carrying more weight than I can handle for too long. I will be doing a video(s) of the walk and posting it to YouTube when we are finished. At this time the walk is planned for June 26 but depends on the weather for the day.
Who knows where another year will take us but hopefully you will be long for the ride.
Chitters,
Jo

Pet Blog Hop
This is week 3 of the Pet Blog Hop. What a neat way to connect to other pet bloggers and be able to read what is on their minds. Some blogs are written from the pet’s point of view and others from their hooman’s.
Enlightened Ferret started out as a place to put important information regarding the care and ownership of ferrets. Along the way friends were made and places found that have made an impact on our mission.
Enlightened Ferret believes that all animals, wild and domesticated, should be treated with the utmost respect. Most were here before us humans ever came to be. It sickens us that we as a species can be so cruel to such wonderful animals be they canine, feline, rodent, reptile, mustela, amphibian, or insectiod.
Monday will see James turn officially 10 years old and kicks off
cents for seniors. We are asking that you take a moment and donate ten cents to Heart of Ohio Ferret Rescue and Association to help decrease their burden of caring for senior ferrets that won’t find another forever home because of their age and/or illness.
Ten dollars a month helps to defray the medical cost for one hospice/senior ferret. It is hard to image anyone giving up their pet after many years together but sometimes the medical bills for a sick ferret is too much for some and for others it is the thought of losing their best friend to death.
When we reach our first $20 of donations Enlightened Ferret will give away a small gift pack that includes a $5 petsmart card and some other goodies. To be included in the give away leave a comment below.
And take a hop from here to another blog in the pet blogosphere. Join in the fun by adding your name to Mr.. Linky....post the Pet Hop button on your bloggie and join in the fun!!
This is a blog hop
1. You’re next…Click here to add your blog
Jo
P.S.
This weekend is also the twitter #pawparty starting at 2pm and running 24hrs.
Come and have a blast. The theme is cooking and there will be music, nom noms, and prizes.

BlogPaws: The Card collection
Not only have I learned some neat stuff I am getting a lovely card collection to match.
I’ll post links to all the cards later as I am blogging on the fly.
So many awesome opportunities have come up for me along with meeting so many nice people.
Missed the second session but believe I was meant to met a web designer who helped me figure out some of the issues I am having on blogger.
Gotta go have to finish packing up the room for our checkout time.
