Ferret Giving Tree

Us three ferrets are lucky we have our loving forever home with our pet hooman, AmyJo, unfortunately there are many other ferrets that are living in shelters and rescues until they either find that perfect hooman or they cross over the Rainbow Bridge.

While they are safe and well taken care of in these places they aren’t always able to have some of the same things as us. Thankfully a bunch of pet hoomans got together and created the Ferret Giving Tree where shelters and rescues can list ferrets and their wish list for Santa Claws to see and maybe some of his elf helpers would jump in to supply some of the wishes.

This year the tree had 225 ferrets but there are still 104 ferrets needing Santas. We will be picking one or two from the tree but for us it isn’t just about the stories it is helping those that should have a loving home no matter what.

So won’t you give the Ferret Giving Tree a look and maybe one of those adorable little faces will tug at your heart strings that you can’t help but his or her Santa.

Have a Chittering Good Day,

Update: Wez selected Mojo Man Mojo Man to be Santa to. Isn’t he just unique? You can read more about him by clicking on his picture.

Ferret Plan a Bust

Two weeks ago I told you about my plan to get me to Blog Paws this year.  I set an extremely high goal of selling 300 stuffed ferrets at a reduced price between 27-50% off of the normal price thinking that many would jump at the chance.
I've had a lot of oohs and awwws, how cute, adorable, ect. but only one buyer. So while I will continue to sew these adorable little ones the price has to go back up starting on Sunday March 30th.
For those attending Blog Paws I will still offer free shipping as I am still working towards getting there somehow. Those that have talked to me about custom ferrets I will let you know the price of those ferrets as they have always been different due to the fact that the material is supplied from other sources.
So until Sunday these guys and any listed on the Enlightened Ferret Fashion's  Face book page are still $10 and Angel $16 each then the prices will revert to the $20 and Angel $22 prices and they will be listed either in the Ferret Fabulous Finds Auction House on Face book or on Etsy.

See someone here you love and want to have you can email me at enlightenedferret@hotmail.com for adoption information. Please let me know if you are attending Blog Paws in the email or if you live outside of the United States.

Review: Pop Up Ball Pit and Thru A Way Tubes

As many of you know, Marshall Pet along with the PetBook Lady sponsored me last year to attend Blog Paws. After the event, I was given many of the items that were in the small animal play area, as it couldn’t be reused. Much to the delight of my three fur babies as by far their favorite items were the pop up ball pit and the ferret thru a way tubes.

IMG_0065

The look of pure happiness on their tiny faces makes me smile as they race through the tube I worked into one of the holes in the pop up ball pit. Although Marylin thinks the tube is hers completely and defends it against her brothers until they just jump over the top of the pit and do a rear sneak attack.

 IMG_0599 IMG_0542 IMG_0544 IMG_0549

I often find them sleeping in the pop up ball pit along with their own additions to the pit. Which have included, jiggle balls, mice, blanket, rattles, and pillows. IMG_0716IMG_0495IMG_0598

Made from sturdy materials the pop up ball pit holds up well to ferrets jumping over the top and racing through the holes. The Velcro® strap on one side makes it easy to attach it to the side of the play area fence or the side of the crate. My one complaint is that the pit doesn’t hold a lot of balls and the few that it does hold are easily kicked out the holes.

The thru a way tubes are made from a heavy plastic wrapped around plastic wrapped wire and stretches a long ways. With work one end can be worked into one of the holes of the pop up ball pit but you need to inspect it frequently as the end wire tend to poke through the plastic and do have a sharp point to them. This was an easy fix for me as I just used my jewelry pliers to bend into a circle that I then crimped shut and So far no more problems with it poking though the plastic.

Ferret paw rating 5 out of 5 for both the Pop Up Ball Pit and the Ferret Thru a way Tubes.

Pets at Home

Ferrets are similar to cats and dogs, they can be trained to use a litter tray and require a few hours of exercise each day. Having access to toys with not only keep them fit and healthy, but also ensures that they don’t get bored. They are naturally inquisitive and require stimulation to be happy. They’ll play with almost anything, so it’s important to ensure that the toys that they have access to are durable and safe.

Make sure toys do not have any loose parts – toys with smaller parts that could break off easily can be chewed and swallowed. Ferrets like to explore and so an effective way to keep them entertained is to provide them with cardboard boxes. PVC pipes and ferret tunnels are also a good idea, as are hanging tubes and hammocks. Cloth bags are ideal for both hiding and sleeping.

Plastic and soft toys can be fun, particularly toys with squeakers or bells. It is important to provide an array of different things that will stimulate and entertain your ferret. Rotating toys will maintain their interest. They like to climb in and out of holes and hide so you’re on to a winner with anything that encourages exploration and adventure. Rope bridges and scramble nets are also great ways to keep them occupied.

They are mischievous and are likely to find entertainment in a whole variety of things. However, to ensure their safety, it’s advisable to provide a range of toys specifically designed for them in mind. This also means that you’ll be able to leave them unsupervised with peace of mind.

If you are thinking about owning a ferret, adopting is a good way to provide one with a second chance. They will often already be house trained, and the adoption process is straightforward.

Domesticated Ferrets vs. Wild Ferrets

I am often asked how pet ferrets differ from wild ferrets.

First this is a misconception and I am sure it comes from the term exotic which clumps all unusual pets into this category.

Second there is only one true wild ferret and that is the Black-footed Ferret and while the Black-Footed Ferret belongs to the Mustelidea group the sub species is nigripes.

The Black-Footed Ferret is an endangered species in North America. Ferrets that live in New Zealand are believed to be a hybrid of ferrets and polecats that were cross bred before their release in the late 1800’s to control the rabbits that had previously been imported to New Zealand and once the rabbit population was controlled these hybrids then looked for other prey which was New Zealand’s flightless birds that had no predators. For this reason ferrets are banned in New Zealand.

Domesticated ferrets love to play. They are inquisitive and will check out anything that has captured their attention. Like cats they love things that move, crinkle, rattle, and roll. Boxes, plastic bags, newspapers, balls, and baby rattles make exciting toys along with anything that might have a feather attached.

Like cats and dogs, some ferrets hate the vacuum and will run away from others will attack it or any other machine that makes a similar noise.

What else would you like to know about ferrets?

Jo

Hartz® Toy Review n Giveaway

I was given the opportunity to review some toys from Hartz® Ultimate Pet Gift Guide.

We were sent Hartz® 5 pack Mini Mice and for Trixie the blood hound who eats almost all of her toys the Hartz® Tuff Stuff Nose Diver. An extra surprise was in the box in the form of tennis balls. Perfect for all of the critters here.HPIM1356 HPIM1359

I split the mice up between the ferrets and the cats. Manny loves his mice and these were the perfect size for him to grip and carry away after he give them a good beating. The cats went absolutely crazy with them. The mice are tucked away some where in the room but at midnight and about eight in the morning they are brought back out to be batted, chewed on, and thrown around by to very happy cats. HPIM1360HPIM1362HPIM1365HPIM1366

Surprisingly the Nose diver did not impress Trixie while she did play with it for the first hour it was in the house it was mainly because it was a new toy. She is not interested in it now; Manny however thinks it is the best thing to drag to his hidey-hole. Even James liked playing with it. HPIM1368HPIM1370HPIM1379HPIM1380HPIM1381

The Nose diver is made of heavy- duty nylon and has a twisted rope that would make up the legs on this duck shaped toy. Great for playing tug –of-war with your furry friend. There is even a squeaker inside.

Trixie did like the tennis balls and she may warm up to the Nose Diver. The winners at this house were the Mini Mice. I will be getting some more of these for both the ferrets and the cats.

Christmas is about giving so Enlightened Ferret and Hartz® are going to give one lucky winner their very own Tuff Stuff Nose Diver.

Leap, scamper, stalk, run, or pounce on over to Hartz® online toy book.  and see the toys they offer then come back and tell me which one you think would be best for your furry friend in the comment section.

The giveaway will end on December 10th and the winner will be picked using  Random.org on December 11th.

Disclaimer: I was given these toys for a review and received no other compensation for the review.  The opinions expressed here are my own.

Have a chittering good day,

Jo

P.S. James passed away on November 28 from Insulinoma. He lived a long happy life and was well into old age at the time of his death.
