Wez is still trying to get all of our sections figured out and since Iz is kind of shy Iz asked Hooman if Iz could just do reviews. This is mez first one.

Wez got a chance to try out some new tags for our harnesses from Jolly Awesome Pet Tags . What is cool about these tags is that they can have our pictures on them along with the important information on the back. Not all tags allow you to do dual sides.  

Jolly Awesome Pet Tags have a great sale going on so you can get three tags for a price lower than their normal $16.95. Yep Iz said three tags. You can put the same image on the tags or do like pet Hooman did and make one for each of your fuzzy friends.

The tags are made from a strong durable plastic substrate that makes them almost impossible to break and are nearly scratch proof something many fuzzy owners would love.

The site is easy to navigate and offers a walk through video on how to design your tags that Hooman would not watch. She can be a bit stubborn. So it took her a while to figure out how to design our tags.

Wez were surprised at how fast Jolly Awesome Pet Tags shipped the tags to us. The one thing wez were not too surprised at was that the tags are a bit big for our harnesses but Hooman says they will work well on our traveling carrier if Iz stop trying to put them in mez hidey hole.

Jolly Awesome Pet Tags are made here in the United States so our pet Hoomans will not have to worry about foreign toxic dyes being used on the tags that could be ingested.

Ferret Plan a Bust

Two weeks ago I told you about my plan to get me to Blog Paws this year.  I set an extremely high goal of selling 300 stuffed ferrets at a reduced price between 27-50% off of the normal price thinking that many would jump at the chance.
I've had a lot of oohs and awwws, how cute, adorable, ect. but only one buyer. So while I will continue to sew these adorable little ones the price has to go back up starting on Sunday March 30th.
For those attending Blog Paws I will still offer free shipping as I am still working towards getting there somehow. Those that have talked to me about custom ferrets I will let you know the price of those ferrets as they have always been different due to the fact that the material is supplied from other sources.
So until Sunday these guys and any listed on the Enlightened Ferret Fashion's  Face book page are still $10 and Angel $16 each then the prices will revert to the $20 and Angel $22 prices and they will be listed either in the Ferret Fabulous Finds Auction House on Face book or on Etsy.

Review: Pop Up Ball Pit and Thru A Way Tubes

As many of you know, Marshall Pet along with the PetBook Lady sponsored me last year to attend Blog Paws. After the event, I was given many of the items that were in the small animal play area, as it couldn’t be reused. Much to the delight of my three fur babies as by far their favorite items were the pop up ball pit and the ferret thru a way tubes.

The look of pure happiness on their tiny faces makes me smile as they race through the tube I worked into one of the holes in the pop up ball pit. Although Marylin thinks the tube is hers completely and defends it against her brothers until they just jump over the top of the pit and do a rear sneak attack.

    

I often find them sleeping in the pop up ball pit along with their own additions to the pit. Which have included, jiggle balls, mice, blanket, rattles, and pillows.

Made from sturdy materials the pop up ball pit holds up well to ferrets jumping over the top and racing through the holes. The Velcro® strap on one side makes it easy to attach it to the side of the play area fence or the side of the crate. My one complaint is that the pit doesn’t hold a lot of balls and the few that it does hold are easily kicked out the holes.

The thru a way tubes are made from a heavy plastic wrapped around plastic wrapped wire and stretches a long ways. With work one end can be worked into one of the holes of the pop up ball pit but you need to inspect it frequently as the end wire tend to poke through the plastic and do have a sharp point to them. This was an easy fix for me as I just used my jewelry pliers to bend into a circle that I then crimped shut and So far no more problems with it poking though the plastic.

 

Ferret paw rating 5 out of 5 for both the Pop Up Ball Pit and the Ferret Thru a way Tubes.

Did You Know…

That ferrets can be taught to walk on a leash like a dog. I get an assortment of different looks when I walk my three fur kids and the most received statement is “I didn’t know they would walk on a leash.”

Like training a dog, you have to have the right equipment.

What you need:

A harness

A belled collar

A leash

A tandem lead

Ferretone

There are different styles of harnesses to choose from and the one you choose has to fit your lifestyle. What works for me may not be the style or design you want. There are three main styles of harnesses and they are:

This is one of the cheapest one it’s made from a twisted cord that loops over the head and has a plastic slider that has a button lock making it look like one of those Bolo Ties   seen on Oil Tycoons but without the silver tips.

To make the second loop you take the line with the metal clip under the ferret’s body behind their front feet and clip it into the plastic loop on the side of the slider.

This type of leash is attractive to many first time ferret owners because of cost but the effectiveness of using this leash is almost nil. The button lock doesn’t stay locked and agile ferrets can maneuver enough to unlock it and slide it so they can walk out of the harness.

The Neoprene Harnesses are usually brightly colored and has Velcro® on the ends that go around the neck and around the body.

 

The Comfort harness is similar to the Neoprene Harness in design but also features buckles for added safety. The furkids buddy Snotface Critter wears one on his travels and Marylin wore a smaller version until she was big enough for her newest harness.

I use the H style harness mainly because it was the only style available where I live until recently when the store started adding more designs to their inventory and Most of the time you bought the harness and leash as a set. These are made from nylon webbing and are adjustable around the neck and body and has the same buckle as the comfort harness.

 

All but the string type harness have a D ring for the leash to attach to. It is important to make sure the harness fits correctly. To loose and the ferret will escape too tight and then the ferret won’t be able to breathe or move properly. Rule of thumb I use is one finger between the ferret and the harness.

Always start harness training inside.

I cannot stress this enough. First, it allows the ferret the chance to get use to having the harness on in a controlled situation. If the ferret realizes they can get out of the harness, they will do so in the safety of their home and not in the big wide world of unknowns.

Second, it lets you adjust the harness so that it is not too tight or too loose without the worry of the ferret escaping.

Marshall Ferret Fun-N-Games Blanket Review

 

Manny, Marcuz, and Marylin were given this blanket for Christmas and like with all ferrets the best part was the bag it came in. After they grew tired of seeing if they all could fit into the sturdy bag with snaps, they turned their attention to the large rectangle on the floor.

At first the two Os confused them as they didn’t come off of the mat to be taken away like the three Xs and the one O that make a rattling sound. That was until I showed them that the O’s were openings that lead inside the blanket giving them a place to play as well as stash some of their smaller toys. They also like to take naps in it.

 

The shapes will fold enough that they can be placed inside the blanket giving the ferrets a new game of trying to get the shapes out so they can be hidden elsewhere.

The yellow O was fun to play Jump through the hoop, as it is large enough for my fur kids to slide through it.

The other game we play is Cover the ferrets and lift the blanket so they can jump up at it. This is a fun game to play with the Manny, Marcuz, and Marylin with different types of blankets.

This worked pretty well but the sewn in Os made it a bit heavier than I’d like so I grab the corners with the Os before starting this game.

Overall, I really like this toy and the fur kids give it Three and half paws because the whole blanket isn’t quite hidey hole material but the three Xs and O are.

Review: The Cat’s (Ferret’s) Trapeze

 

The boys and I toured the Catification lounge that was sponsored by Jackson Galaxy at Blog Paws. The boys tried out quite a few things there.

Marcuz loved the cardboard boxes.

Manny decided to chill out in one of the cat bed offered through Modern Cat.

While Manny took a nap Marcuz checked out another cat item.

but he wasn’t impressed with the cushion so he pushed it out and curled up to take a snooze.

There was a lot more stuff in that lounge but the boys were ready to move on to other adventures at Blog Paws. I filled out a form for a chance to win one of the many items and I won The Cat’s Trapeze.

What a great item. The boys love the little hammock that hangs on the bottom to take naps in. The first level should have some pillows or something in the zippered area I leave it open so the boys can hide in the pouch.

At the moment I haven’t let Marcuz see that there is another level to the trapeze as he would be climbing it all the time but once I get their room finished and have an area fixed that has a large pillow under it then he can climb it all he wants.

Heat Kills

 

It is summer in the United States and the temperatures are soaring to high numbers. I have talked about this before but it bears repeating. Ferrets do not do well in temps over 68 degrees.

That means traveling is curtailed until the temps are lower or find ways to make it uneventful. But it also means making the home comfortable as well.

I live in Pennsylvania and the house I live in does not have air condition. While I do use fans to cool off the boy’s area it isn’t always enough. I get asked about the two thermometers in their room. One is by their cage and the other is on the wall near the window.

This way I know what the temperature is near the outside wall and by their cage. This allows me to implement my summer plan as needed.

The first thing I do starting in May unless it has been warmer in April is to start making frozen water bottles. I usually have 5 to 8 bottles made by June. These are covered in clean socks that have lost their mate. These are made from 2 liter soda bottles, gallon water/milk jugs, and 12-16 oz bottles that have held soda/tea/water.

Keeping an eye on the thermometers I know when to place these premade ice blocks in strategic places such as in front of the fan and in an area where the boys can climb over them while playing. When the temp in front of their cage reaches 65 degrees I place a worn towel in the cage with one of the gallon jugs. This gives the boys a place to sleep/cool off and the towel absorbs the condensation.

While we are traveling it is a bit harder to make sure the boys don’t get overheated. It got warm in Utah while we were at Blog Paws and stayed warm all the way home. But I had made a purchase of crate fan and extra batteries.

Also the Ferret Chariot has air conditioning. The boy’s crate was placed on the back seat in the center so that the crate received a good amount of the cool air from the air conditioner and the crate fan was on high for most of the trip.

In both cases the boys get frequent rub downs with soaked washcloths to help them maintain their temperature.

There is a wonderful product on the market now but it is only made for dogs called the Chill Spot. We are hopeful that they will be able to downsize their product for cats and ferrets as all pets need a place to chill out.

Remember Heat Kills within moments. Never take your pet for a ride and then leave them locked in the car while doing errands. Even with the windows cracked your car is an oven baking your pet from the inside out. What a cruel death. Show your love by leaving them home where they can stay cool and alive.

Pawing Forward

 

 

 

I’ve been fortunate to meet some really great people and their pets through my blog and on twitter.

 

One of them is Cokie the Cat . My boys got to meet Cokie’s stand in at Blog Paws along with Flat Tyler.

Save the Nose

     Odors are a part of owning a pet. Sometimes the odor dissipates in seconds and other times it lingers on for hours if not days depending on what the odor is from. Many companies have developed ways of covering up the odor but most often it just has a fruity, flowery, or other scent mixed in with the offending odor.

     Nose Offense isn’t like those other sprays it actually works. I was lucky enough to receive a full size bottle from the Rembo corp. to try. Living in a house with more than just ferrets the odors are a bit varied. They include a bloodhound, a bird, a smoker, and now two kittens.

     I’ve tried many other odor sprays that claimed to neutralize the odors but they all failed to neutralize all the odors in the house. So I expected the same out of Nose Offense. Not only did Nose Offense do what they claimed but also it did so on all the odors in the house.

     The main pet odor room is where James and Manny live and play and of late Trixie the bloodhound has decided that she needs to relieve herself in that room. So the combined odors made your eyes water the second you walked in. Nose Offense has removed those odors from the room making it a joy to walk into again.

     The one thing I didn’t like was the initial scent Nose Offense gave off when you first sprayed it and it seems others didn’t care for it either. I was sent a smaller bottle of Nose Offense recently and it doesn’t have the scent but still has the great odor killing effect of the stinky things.

     I love the fact that it is a non-toxic item that is safe for pets and comes in a recyclable bottle. Give Nose Offense a moment of your time and check out their website.

Review of Young Again Ferret Food

      On May 5^th I received a free bag of Young Again Ferret food from Young Again Pet Foods.

     When I was asked if I would like to receive a bag I expected a small trial size bag that would maybe hold enough for three days of feeding. What a surprise it was to receive a full size bag of food.

     Because Manny has a warranty on him I have to feed him a “Named” food for a year.

     James on the other paw got to do the taste test of the new food. At first I had to mix the food he had been eating with the Young Again Ferret food for a couple of days so it didn’t upset his tummy.

     The first couple of days James ignored the tiny pellets because they weren’t molded into the shapes he was used to. During that time frame I also used the pellets as treats for when he was playing outside his cage. I am sure there is a mound of Young Again Ferret food in one of his hidey-holes but it did do the trick by the third day he was eating both foods.

     The first time James shed he lost most of his black and gray coloring leaving him to look like Dark Eyed White (DEW) when in fact he was considered a silver mitt. James now has color returning to his fur.

James has been eating this food for just over two months now and can I see more differences than just his color returning. His eyes are alert and sparkling. His fur is a lot softer than it has been in a long time.

Their site states that in a few short weeks you will see these differences in your ferret:

· Promotes proper weight management

· Helps promote fat loss and increases muscle density

· Less waste in the litter box

· More sociable behavior

· More Positive energy

     Out of their list I have seen a difference in James fur, his weight has gone up a little bit and he has bulked up in his muscles. I am changing the litter box less and the odor isn’t as bad as it has been. James has always been sociable so I can’t really comment on that area but he does have more energy than most 10 year olds I have seen.

     While Manny isn’t suppose to get any other food but the one recommend for him it hasn’t stopped him from sneaking a nibble or two of James food. He really likes it also.

     The food has shown some great improvements in James there are some down points to it.

1. It isn’t’ available in stores which adds to the cost of a bag of food.
2. The zip lock closer doesn’t always stay closed and has lead to some spills. (Not that Trixie minded)
3. It only comes in 8lb bags. For many this is the perfect size but for others it may not be.

     These may seem like petty down points but ferret food is expensive to being with and sometimes an extra shipping charge takes to big of a bite out a person’s budget.

     I do like the fact they do offer you two different ways of getting free shipping but until I know how long it will take James to eat a bag of food the bottomless bag option is out of the question. At the moment we aren’t even half way through the bag.

     Out of a paw rating of one to five we give Young Again Ferret Food a Four paw rating.
